i personally think a necktie looks better but i'm not sure if a bow tie is more traditional for proms because that is what you see in movies.
Nicholas Atgemis of Le Noeud Papillon - Sydney, demonstrates how to tie a mogador silk bow tie, which is a heavier silk with a curved underside and a flat edge on top. The thickness of the silk makes it more difficult to tie.
I love this - its is really neat to see a scarf used in this way - a bow tie for ladies and those fun occasions!

First off, yes, i'm a woman asking this. I'm going to school to be a mortician, and I just think it looks more professional than some of the things I've seen the other women come into class wearing. Anyhow.
So i've got the steps down for tying it, but when i go to tighten it, I know I'm supposed to get an upside down triangle shaped knot right? well it ends up looking like a square, or a triangle turned up, or just plain screwed up.
