Are you interested in the simple origins of the bow tie?
I have just added and article - the History of the Bow Tie - which explains the two most popular theories about it origins. Whether originally from North Africa, or Europe it has certainly become well established on every continent - and nowhere more so than in America.
The bow tie has evolved from being an item of clothing worn by a few professional and influential people to one which is now very popular amongst people from all walks of life. Celebrities who have worn the bow tie have ensured its rise in popularity.
The clip - on bow tie is one way in which the bow tie continues to change as it is adapted for more, less formal occasions.

i personally think a necktie looks better but i'm not sure if a bow tie is more traditional for proms because that is what you see in movies.
My date is wearing a light lavender dress, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with my color scheme. I have a black suit that makes me look sharp, but I can rent a tux. If I should get a tux, what color. I'll wear a bow tie if I choose the tux because people say it's formal, but I've heard that people think that bow ties look dumb nowadays. Should I wear a neck tie or a bow tie, and what accessories should I wear with it? (cummerbund, vest, etc)
What color shirt as well?

I was planning on wearing either:
A - Black suit (I don't have a tux and I can't be bothered to get one) and white/black shirt (not sure). With that I would not wear a bow tie or normal tie, just leave the top button undone (due to the hot weather).
B - Same thing, but I think the only bow tie I have is purple. I think I have a black one, if I do wear a bow tie, I was thinking of wearing it really low, a bit like lil wayne in lollipop.
What do you think? Any other tips/ideas?
Because of annoying final exams, I didn't have time to get a plus 1 ticket, so I don't have a date to correspond with 
normal tie as in low, lil wayne style or proper style? If I wear it properly, won't it look too much like a wedding reception?

I might do some black yoga capris, long sleeve v neck back shirt with a white cami underneath, a red bow tie, and some white gloves.
And for my face I was thinking white face powder, red swirls on cheeks, puppet lines, and I have black hair so probably just make it crazy... Tips?
